Homelessness – a big issue
Not everyone on our doorstep is here to
work, shop or meet friends. There are a number of homeless
people in Edinburgh, particularly in the city centre. At St
Andrew's and St George's Church we work in partnership with
local organisations to try to meet some of the needs of homeless
people.
Bethany
Bethany
Christian Trust is a Christian charity which offers accommodation
and support to homeless and vulnerable people. Bethany uses
our premises regularly as an emergency night shelter during
the winter months, providing food, safety, warmth and friendship
to people who would otherwise have to sleep rough on the streets
of Edinburgh.
Rock Trust
The
Rock Trust offers supported accommodation, advice and
friendship to young single people in Edinburgh. A sponsored
“sleep out” in aid of the Rock Trust takes place
annually on the pavement outside St Andrew's and St George's.
Up to 100 people, mainly from local schools and churches,
take part in this, to raise awareness of what it’s like
to sleep on the city centre streets.
Fresh Start
Fresh Start is a collaborative project between
Edinburgh churches to help homeless people set up a new home.
St Andrew's and St George's supports Fresh Start by donating
basic furnishings and equipment.
