Safe water and sanitation are basic human rights
which everyone in the world should have access to.
Yet today 884 million people don’t have safe water to
drink and one in eight people don’t have sanitation. The resulting diseases cause 4,000 children to die
every single day.
WaterAid believe that safe water, improved hygiene
and sanitation underpin health, education and
livelihoods, forming the first, essential step in overcoming
poverty. They try to transform lives by improving access
to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in the
world’s poorest communities and by working with local
partners, who understand local issues, to provide
them with the skills and support to help people set up
and manage practical and sustainable projects that
meet their real needs.
They also work locally and internationally to change
policy and practice and ensure that water, hygiene
and sanitation’s vital role in reducing poverty is recognised.
